Equilibrium distribution coefficients for extraction of chlorinated hydrocarbons and aromatics from water into undecane

Abstract: Equilibrium distribution (partition) coefficients have been measured for extraction of 17 different compounds from water into undecane, modeling kerosene. Solutes included chlorinated hydrocarbons, aromatics, bromoform, and 2-chlorophenol-all appearing on the EPA priority pollutant list. Highly dilute solutions were used, and analyses were carried out by flame ionization and electron-capture gas chromatography, with extensive precautions against losses by volatilization during handling. The measured distributi… Show more

“…[8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15] Exceptions are those for the 1,3,5triazine pesticides, studied by Jo¨nsson et al, 34 for which descriptors have only recently been obtained. 35 Although many compounds in Table 5 are the same as, or are close analogs of, those in Table 3, 7,16,[36][37][38] there are a number of sets of compound that are considerably different. 34,39 One test of the generality of an equation is that it holds over a wide range of compound type, and so the data collected in Table 5 will be an interesting test of eqn.…”

“…Dodecane (a C12 alkane) was selected to simulate the core of the SDS aggregate (SDS is a C12 surfactant). Partitioning studies were performed with naphthalene, ANSA, and naphthol using standard techniques (44). The contaminant-dodecane partitioning coefficient (Kc,2) was determined for these compounds (where KCn is defined as the ratio of the molar fraction of the organic solute in dodecane Xc12, to the molar fraction of the organic in water, Xaq).…”

“…The partition coefficient for 1,2-dichlorobenzene in undecane-water system is 3030 according to Banerjee et al (1980) as tabulated by Barbarl and King (1982). The major thrust of this study centered on predispersed solvent formulation, removals of solute from the wastewater and solvent (extract) recovery from the water phase during mixer/separator operations.…”
