Equilibrium, Kinetic, and Thermodynamic Studies of Cationic Dyes Adsorption on Corn Stalks Modified by Citric Acid

Abstract: The modification of agricultural wastes and their use as low-cost and efficient adsorbents is a prospective pathway that helps diminish waste and decrease environmental problems. In the present research, the natural adsorption capacity of corn stalks (CS) was improved by modification of their surface with citric acid. The adsorption capacity of the modified corn stalks (CS-C) was determined with the help of cationic dyes (methylene blue and malachite green). The equilibrium, kinetics, and thermodynamics of the… Show more

“…Figure 14 shows the desorption efficiency values for the three regenerating agents used. The very low desorption percent in distilled water shows that the adsorption is not dominated by weak bonds [ 93 ]. The desorption results obtained using HCl and NaOH indicate that ion exchange may be involved in adsorption but it doesn’t have a very significant role and other strong forces intervene in process [ 94 , 95 , 96 ].…”

“…After that, a Van't Hoff curve can be constructed, which is a plot of ln(K e ) to 1/T. The values of ΔH° (standard enthalpy change) and ΔS° (standard entropy change) can be identified based on the slope and intercept of the Van't Hoff curve [25,27].…”

“…Chemical modification with various chemicals alters the structure and the surface properties of adsorbents, allows one improving their adsorption performance [1,2]. Generally, native straw of cereal plants as an adsorbent has the low adsorption capacity and its modification using citric acid increases of carboxyl groups in lignocellulosic materials and is efficient, economical, environmentally friendly, and easily produced [9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16][17].…”

“…At the same time, for novel adsorbents' introduction, the adsorption studies of kinetics, isotherms and thermodynamics are essential in supplying the basic information required for the design and operation of adsorption equipment for wastewater treatment. Concluding from the literature [9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16][17], the kinetics, equilibrium, and thermodynamics of cationic dyes adsorption on citric acid modified wheat straw [9,10], citric acid modified corn straw [11,12] as well as on citric acid modified rice straw [13][14][15] is well understood. In this paper, the focus of the study was to investigate kinetic, equilibrium, and thermodynamic aspects in order to evaluation cationic dyes (methylene blue and malachite green) adsorption efficiency on citric acid modified barley straw because these issues have not yet been examined [17].…”
