Equivalence of the Color Trails Test and Trail Making Test in Nonnative English-Speakers

Abstract: The Color Trails Test (CTT) has been described as a culture-fair test of visual attention, graphomotor sequencing, and effortful executive processing abilities relative to the Trail Making Test (TMT). In this study, the equivalence of the TMT and the CTT among a group of 64 bilingual Turkish university students was examined. “…Such differences have been noted previously[6] and are not surprising in this sample for a number of reasons. First, performance on Trails B is predicated on the notion that it draws upon over-learned serial stimuli[30]. In Russia, the alphabet is not overlearned, nor is it learned in the same manner as it is in the U.S., i.e.…”

“…The concept that speeded cognitive performance is as important as accurate cognitive performance is not as valued a cultural concept in certain cultures as it is in the U.S. [37]. In a comparison of 50 U.S. and 50 Russian participants' performance on timed tasks and attitudes toward testing, Agranovich et al[37] found that Russians performed slower on the Color Trails Test[29], which is similar to the Trail Making Test Part B[30] but thought to be more culturally fair. Participants completed an assessment of attitudes toward time, the Culture of Time Inventory-33 (COTI-33).…”

“…RBANS yields a total score and sub-scores for five cognitive domains: immediate memory, delayed memory, attention, visual spatial and language, with higher scores reflecting better performance [17]. Other clinical outcomes included Color Trails Test [18], Clinical Global Impression of Change (CGIC) [19], Clinical Global Impression of Disease Severity (CGIds) [20] and the Geriatric Depression Screen (GDS) to assess mood [21]. …”
