Eradication of gastric Helicobacter spp. by triple therapy in dogs

Abstract: ABSTRACT:The aim of this study was to determine the efficacy of a triple anti-Helicobacter therapy using omeprazole, amoxicillin and clarithromycin (OAC) in dogs. A total of 15 healthy adult stray dogs with naturally acquired Helicobacter infection were evaluated using polymerase chain reaction and rapid urease test. Subsequently, they received a 21-day triple regimen. One day after the discontinuation of treatment, a second molecular analysis of gastric biopsies revealed complete eradication of Helicobacter D… Show more

“…has been associated with gastritis in dogs and cats [89]. The only treatment is a 'triple therapy' composed of two antibiotics and a proton-pump inhibitor [90] but at least in humans this therapy is not always successful and new alternatives are being developed [91]. Some probiotic strains, such as L. casei DN-114 001, showed a high success rate of eradication of Helicobacter in children(along with a standard treatment) at a high daily dosage of 1 Â 10 10 CFU [92].…”

“…A lack of knowledge about the pathogenicity of Helicobacter infections in both dogs and cats makes treatment decisions difficult. Furthermore, in many veterinary studies, Helicobacter infections have been difficult to eradicate [ 27 , 28 ]. Although many dogs and cats treated with the pharmacological combinations classically used in human medicine did not experience long-term eradication when re-tested, in many of these patients, the frequency of vomiting and the gastric lesion severity improved with therapy.…”
