Erectile Dysfunction in Chronic Peritoneal Dialysis Patients: Incidence and Treatment with Sildenafil

Abstract: Objectives Sexual and erectile dysfunction (ED) have been reported to occur frequently in male patients with end-stage renal disease maintained on dialysis. Numerous etiologies for this ED have been suggested. Although a variety of therapies for the ED of the dialysis patient have been suggested, most clinicians indicate that patients report a poor response to therapy. Recently, sildenafil has been reported to be beneficial in treating patients with ED of both organic and psychogenic causes. The present study … Show more

“…In addition, sildenafil has been investigated for the treatment of ED in patients with other comorbid conditions, such as Parkinson's disease (48)(49)(50), multiple sclerosis (51,52), spina bifida (53), renal failure requiring dialysis (54)(55)(56) and organ transplant (57)(58)(59)(60)(61). The extensive data from these trials demonstrate that sildenafil is well tolerated and effective for the treatment of ED in all of these patient populations.…”

“…Most of the reported adverse effects of sildenafil are considered mild and rarely result in discontinuation of treatment [5]. Sildenafil can improve the quality of life of patients with ED and various comorbid diseases, including ESRD [6–10]. In the present study, we evaluated the efficacy and safety of sildenafil in patients on haemodialysis (HD) or peritoneal dialysis (PD).…”

“…Medication safety is difficult to interpret in the small studies, including ours, that have been investigated until now. Sildenafil was well tolerated in the selected dialysis patients who reported improved sexual function with no major adverse effects (8,9,(11)(12)(13)(14)(15)(20)(21)(22)(23)(24)(25)(26)(27)29). Larger studies of patients with ESRD are warranted.…”

“…A cutoff score of 21 (range 1-25) was used to define ED. ED was classified likewise into 5 validated severity levels, ranging from none (22)(23)(24)(25), mild (17)(18)(19)(20)(21), mild/moderate (12)(13)(14)(15)(16), moderate (8-11) through severe (1-7).…”
