Erectile dysfunction in hemodialysis patients with diabetes mellitus: Association with age and hemoglobin A1c levels

Abstract: Aim : Erectile dysfunction (ED) is common in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) as well as those undergoing hemodialysis (HD). The purpose of this study is to investigate the frequency and severity of ED in HD patients with DM and those without DM. In addition, we examined the relationship between erectile function and several risk factors, including presence of DM and hemoglobin A1c levels in HD patients. Methods : This study involved 180 patients on HD, including 66 HD patients with DM (DM-HD) and 114 patie… Show more

“…If we compare our data with Neto et al 7 who reported prevalence of ED 52.6% in patients < 50 years of age, this difference may attributed to economical, dialysis facilities, associated comorbidities and medication used. There is also very high incidence of ED in diabetic patients on maintenance hemodialysis in our study, our total diabetic patients were 36, and 35 (97.2%) were having some degree of ED as compared to nondiabetic (26 patients), 20 (77%) were having ED and 6 (23%) were without ED as shown in table 4, Similar results was reported by Miyata et al 9 Age & diabetes are strongly linked with high prevalence of erectile dysfunction reported in several published studies. Combined prevalence of erectile dysfunction in diabetes (not on hemodialysis) of any severity was reported 52% and increasingly prevalent with advancing age.…”

“…However, the prevalence of ED among diabetic patients varies; it is estimated to be between 35-85 %, (16,17,18) which is different from the claims of ElSakka & Tayeb (19) who reported that the prevalence was 86.1%. Khatib et al (20) stated that there is a clear association between glycemic control and the prevalence and severity of ED, which has been stated in other studies, (21)(22)(23) but was not evident in other studies. (24)(25)(26)(27) Ziaei-Rad et al, (15) for example, made their study on Iranian men with poor glycemic control.…”

“…Severe ED (IIEF-5 score 5-7) increased from 0.4% (20-30 years) to 0.5% (41-50 years), 1.3% (51-60 years) and to 9.6% in those who were aged 71-80 years in this study. Miyata Y et al, [6] also identified aging as an independent factor in both ED and severe ED.…”
