Ergonomic conditions in manual harvesting in Swedish outdoor cultivation

Abstract: Harmful work postures arise during manual harvesting in Swedish outdoor cultivation. The risk can be reduced using mechanized work tools and optimal cultivation methods. Adequate work training, including instructions about optimal working postures and movements, may reduce the risk of MSD, but will most likely not eliminate it completely.

“…The same was also demonstrated in a study of agricultural workers in Sweden. Performing the tasks in a standing or walking posture decreased back discomfort (Pinzke and Lavesson, 2018[ 51 ]). The same occurs in other tasks such as "phytosanitary treatments", where most of the postures the worker adopted were with a straight back and walking, obtaining the two lowest risk levels (Table 4 (Tab.…”

“…Man's expertise and experience are not only necessary in viticulture, but in agriculture as a whole [31]. Therefore, open air jobs, which are often unfavourable from a micro-climatic viewpoint, and the use of force, especially with hand-use instruments, are all conditions likely to cause MSD cases to increase, which are con-causally correlated to professional exposure [32][33][34].…”

“…Today, these pathologies are ranked first among those recorded and refunded, both in Italy and Europe [22,33,35,36]: among them, the mostly spread are the carpal tunnel syndrome, epichondilitis, rotatory cuff tunnel syndrome and lombo-sacral rachis pathologies [19,20,[31][32][33][34]37].…”

“…Ergonomic interventions were also evaluated in [47][48][49] for lessening the physical load during harvesting. Silverstein et al [47] utilized an ergonomically designed bag in place of the tied basket around the waist during coffee harvesting.…”

“…The findings demonstrated considerable reduce of damage quantity and body discomfort that was combined with augmented work output. Finally, Pinzke & Lavesson [49] tested a conveyor belt in place of carrying a box, which was proved to lessen the harmful stooping. Interestingly, for the case of strawberries growing in pots, the position was characterized by a straight neck and back along with lowered arms, whereas when growing on raised beds, kneeling or bending forward with straight legs was noted, which can result in harmful lumbar compression.…”
