Ergonomics in Laparoscopic Surgery

Abstract: Despite the many advantages for patients, laparoscopic surgery entails certain ergonomic inconveniences for surgeons, which may result in decreasing the surgeons' performance and musculoskeletal disorders. In this chapter, the current status of ergonomics in laparoscopy, laparoendoscopic single-site surgery (LESS), and robotassisted surgery will be reviewed. Ergonomic guidelines for laparoscopic surgical practice and methods for ergonomic assessment in surgery will be described. Results will be based on the sc… Show more

“…Performance outcomes were measured using a quantitative and qualitative score, and skills outcomes were measured by the number of movements and the path length traveled by the instrument. The RULA method was used for the surgeon's postural analysis [2,25]. Muscular activity was assessed by means of electromyography of six muscular groups.…”

“…The use of surgical ports creates a pivot point for the instruments in the body wall, which reduces the degrees of freedom (DoF) of the surgical instruments, from six (free motion) in conventional surgery to four in laparoscopic surgery, as illustrated in Figure 1. Besides, laparoscopic instruments suffer from ergonomically inadequate handle designs and inefficient transmission of force and tactile feedback from the handle to the instrument tip [1,2].…”

“…In order to address some of these technical limitations, new surgical instruments and devices have been developed aiming to enhance the dexterity, accuracy, and ergonomics of laparoscopic instruments [5]. In addition, new methodological approaches and instrumental techniques for ergonomic analysis have been implemented to improve the working conditions of surgeons, as well as the design of the laparoscopic material [6].…”
