Erosion Resistance and Damage Mechanism of TiN/ZrN Nanoscale Multilayer Coating

Abstract: Ceramic coating is an effective method for improving the erosion resistance of a material, particularly for titanium alloys. In this study, a TiN/ZrN (ceramic/ceramic) nanoscale multilayer coating is designed and prepared on the Ti6Al4V titanium alloy surface by the physical vapor deposition (PVD) process. The cross-sectional microstructure and phase composition are measured using SEM and XRD, respectively. The hardness, elastic modulus, and adhesion of the coating are measured by the nano-indentation and scra… Show more

“…Especially for helicopters and transporters serving in the desert, the problem of solid particle erosion is more prominent and urgent. An anti-erosion coating has been considered as an effective way to improve the server life of aero-engines in the past decades [1][2][3][4]. Coatings also face erosion problems brought by solid particles, and the knowledge of the performance of the coating during erosion remains insufficient due to the complexity of the damage mode and mechanism [5,6].…”

“…Observed in Figure 3, there is no acoustic emission signal occurred at the beginning of the test, while acoustic emission peaks occurred and fluctuated violently when the normal load was more than 83.5 N. The inset SEM image in Figure 3 shows the corresponding scratch scar morphology, which reveals that when the load exceeded 83.5 N, some chips were separated from the substrate on one side of the scratch, implying coating failure (delamination) [26]. Therefore, the critical load the niobium coating can withstand is about 83.5 N, which is above 30 N, generally accepted to be adequate for sliding contact applications [27,28].…”

“…Ti-6Al-4V alloy has been extensively used in aviation and aerospace industries because of its high specific strength, light weight, and corrosion resistance [1][2][3]. However, its poor tribological behavior, low wear, and anti-erosion resistance have limited the extension of Ti-6Al-4V [4,5]. Transition metal nitrides and other types of hard coating or film are convenient and effective surface strengthening techniques for expanding the application of Ti-6Al-4V.…”
