Erosion studies of cermet-coated ASTM A36 steel

Abstract: Purpose This paper aims to perform the solid particle erosion studies in simulated coal-fired boiler conditions with a view to compare the erosion behavior of two different types of detonation gun (D-Gun) sprayed cermet coating powders, that is, WC-12%Co and Cr3C2-25%NiCr on ASTM A36 steel and bare (uncoated) ASTM A36 steel. Design/methodology/approach Erosion studies were performed using an air jet erosion test rig at impingement angles of 45°, 60° and 90°. During the erosion studies weight loss, erosion ra… Show more

“…However, the kinetic energy of particles increases owing to the increase in their velocity which consequently contributes to bombardment on the testing specimen with a high impact. A similar type of observation was reported by some researchers in recent studies (Desale et al , 2005; Shibe and Chawla, 2019).…”

“…Researchers (Chowdhury et al , 2016; Thakur and Arora, 2017; Javaheri et al , 2018; Shibe and Chawla, 2019) reported the common erosion mechanisms such as microcutting, pits, fractures and abrasion-erosion in the brittle materials. However, plowing, deformations and lip formations are common mechanisms on case of ductile materials (Walker and Robbie, 2013; Walker and Hambe, 2015; Kumar et al , 2018b; Shibe and Chawla, 2019).…”

“…They found that NiBCrSiWCCo coating underwent to lower slurry erosion than NiCr 2 O 3 coating. Shibe and Chawla (2019) studied the solid particle erosion of WC-12%Co and Cr 3 C 2 -25%NiCr D-Gun coated on ASTM A36 steel under the coal-fired boiler conditions. The identified that the Cr 3 C 2 -25%NiCr coating shows maximum erosion rate at 90° impact angle and minimum at 45°.…”

“…Subsequently, many researchers developed various erosion models to study pipeline erosion (Bitter, 1963;Mclaury, 1996;Raymond, 1994;Tabakoff et al, 1979;Zhang et al, 2007). Shibe and Chawla (2019) simulated the corrosion of solid particles under the conditions of coal-fired boilers and used a jet erosion tester to conduct erosion studies at impact angles of 45°, 60°and 90°. Pouraria et al (2020) used the dense discrete particle model (DDPM) to study the erosion of elbows and the erosion rate decreased under high particle loads.…”
