Cancer. 2007;109:1972-9.The authors apologize for failing to cite reciprocally two recently published studies concerning long-term consequences after treatment of hyperthyroidism with radioactive iodine (RAI). In the first paper (Increased cancer incidence after radioiodine treatment for hyperthyroidism Cancer 2007;109:1972-9), we reported increased cancer incidence in patients treated with RAI compared with the ageand gender-matched controls; observed incidences of stomach, kidney, and breast cancer were increased among RAI-treated patients. In the second paper (Increased cardiovascular and cancer mortality after radioiodine treatment for hyperthyroidism. J Clin Endocrinol Metab 2007;92:2190-6), we reported increased total mortality in these cohorts; this was largely explained by cerebrovascular disease, although increased mortality from all cancers and gastro-esophageal cancer was also reported. These data were complementary to each other, with one year's difference in the follow-up period.
