Currently, many countries try to satisfy their energy needs with an increasing usage of renewable resources. The general motivations, with varying weighting in the different countries, are ecological reasons, concerns about energy security, and economical considerations. A for now rather theoretical question, although interesting for opening a long-term perspective, is how an energy supply from exclusively renewable energy resources could look like. This question has to be answered individually for any specific energy supply system. The present paper has the objective to present and evaluate a scenario for an electricity supply only from renewable energy resources for the Java-Bali grid. After designing a load time series for the year 2050 for the Java-Bali grid, a scenario is developed how to cover the load with electricity from renewable energy resources alone. Assumptions about the usable energy sources are made as well as assumptions about the available power plant capacity or energy potential. A specific challenge is the fact that solar energy must be the main source in such a renewable-energy based system, which comes with the need for a large storage capacity to match the power supply at any time with the load. Several possibilities are presented how to bring down the storage capacity: the increment of the installed PV capacity, the usage of bioenergy for seasonal balancing, and the complementation of the proposed short-term storage with an additional long-term storage. The study shows some of the specific challenges that a gradual transformation of the current electricity supply system on Java and Bali into a renewable-energy-based one would face and gives some hints about how to cope with these challenges. Scenarios like the one designed in this study are an important tool for decision-makers who face the task to scrutinize the consequences of choosing between different development paths. Industrial facilities usually need multiple energy subsystems, e.g., for heat, cold, and electric power supply. Normally, these energy subsystems are controlled locally and independent of each other. Coupling of the different subsystems can open up additional potential. Fraunhofer IISB has developed a demonstration and research platform for investigating the benefits of such sector coupling. A major precondition is to understand the energy flows in the system and establish an overall and flexible system control to realize the required algorithms for setting up an intelligent decentralized energy system. Major components of the overall system are various storages, which extend the degree of freedom for sector coupling and increase the effectiveness of the different subsystems.

Investigation of Carbon Nanofiber‐supported Electrocatalysts with Ultra‐low Platinum Loading for the Use in PEM Fuel Cells

The present study aims to investigate gas diffusion electrodes with ultra‐low platinum loading and increased durability, prepared by pulsed electrodeposition process, applicable for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFC). Testing was performed both, in situ in a PEMFC test bench while prepared GDEs were compared to anodes and cathodes with commercially available catalysts by Johnson Matthey (JM), as well as ex situ regarding electrochemical properties and catalyst layer structure. High and stable performance of developed electrodes was achieved, while the Pt catalyst loading of investigated anodes and cathodes was reduced to 10 µgPt cm−2. The catalyst deposition was achieved via pulsed electrodeposition process from H2PtCl6‐containing electrolyte on an oxygen plasma‐pretreated corrosion‐stable carbon nanofiber (CNF) support. In situ performance tests show a similar operation behavior of the compared anodes, while activation losses of investigated cathodes are high due to the limited amount of catalyst material. However, Pt/CNF_c cathodes show significantly higher power densities than cathodes prepared with JM catalyst. Membrane electrode assemblies containing developed Pt/CNF_a anodes with 10 µgPt cm−2 reached a power density of 0.525 W cm−2 at a cell potential of 0.65 V, which was similar to anodes with commercially available HiSPEC 2000 catalysts by JM. Accelerated stress tests (AST) revealed that Pt/CNF_a anodes preserve their performance, whereas the commercial catalyst degraded severely. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) indicated a high electrochemical active surface area of Pt/CNF_a anodes. Moreover, the electrode characteristics, analyzed via electrochemical impedance spectroscopy after AST, showed marginal anode degradation.
