Error modeling and compensation for FDM machines

Abstract: Purpose The purpose of this paper is to improve the accuracy of fused deposition modeling (FDM) machines. Design/methodology/approach An integrated error model and compensation methods are developed to improve the accuracy of FDM machines. The effects of machine-dependent and process-dependent errors are included in this integrated model. The error model is then used to obtain compensated values for the printed object. A three-dimensional artifact is designed for the FDM machine characterization. This proces… Show more

“…This error measurement technique is also the most widely used in AM machines. A proof of this are some works previously developed by different researchers (Tong et al, 2003(Tong et al, , 2008Bochmann et al, 2015;Song et al, 2014;Cajal et al, 2016;Majarena et al, 2017;Lyu and Manoochehri, 2019), as well as the proposal of the ISO/ASTM 52902 standard to assess the geometric capacity of AM systems using artefacts.…”

“…Material properties: although they also depend partially on the considered technology, some properties affect to most of the processes, such as density, surface tension, thermal conductivity, moisture absorption or melting temperature (Sutton et al , 2016; Vock et al , 2019; Yuasa et al , 2021; Fico et al , 2022; Shanmugam et al , 2021). Machine errors: regardless of the considered technology, constructive components (hardware and software) of the AM machines cause kinematic errors, loads, dynamics forces and control errors that are transferred to the part under construction (ISO 230-1:2012, 2012; Bochmann et al , 2015; Cajal et al , 2016; Lyu and Manoochehri, 2019; Tong et al , 2003, 2008). …”

“…Many publications have been devoted to the definition of shrinkage of material in 3D printing, namely, in [93][94][95][96] and others. However, in these works, everything comes down to the authors' proposal of a general shrinkage coefficient for the entire model.…”

“…The offline compensation can compensate for the geometric error of the gear hobbing machine, while the online compensation can compensate for the cutting force and cutting the heat of the gear hobbing machine. These compensation methods are both highly costly and technically difficult to implement [8]. The proposed method here can reduce the error and improve the accuracy in the subsequent machine tool processing (such as turning teeth, slotting teeth, and grinding teeth).…”
