Error Separation Method for Precision Measurement of the Run-Out of a Microdrill Bit by Using a Laser Scan Micrometer Measurement System

Abstract: This paper describes an error separation method for a precision measurement of the run-out of a microdrill bit by using a measurement system consisting of a concentricity gauge and a laser scan micrometer (LSM). The proposed error separation method can achieve a sub-micrometric measurement accuracy of the run-out of the microdrill bit without the requirement of ultra-precision rotary drive devices. In the measurement, the spindle error motion of the concentricity gauge is firstly measured by using the LSM and … Show more

“…In this study, a commercial optical micrometer [18,19] is employed for on-machine measurement of the diameter of a ceramic cylindrical workpiece. Figure 1(a) shows a schematic of the typical optical configuration of an optical micrometer mainly composed of three lenses, a high-brightness LED and a charge-coupled device (CCD) line camera.…”

“…However, this type of on-machine measurement can be affected by the error motions of machine axes, and it is necessary to make some efforts to improve the accuracy of measurement [3]. Meanwhile, in the case of measuring the diameter of a cylindrical workpiece, the influence of error motions of machine axes can be avoided by employing an optical micrometer [18,19]. Since the optical micrometer can measure a workpiece in various sizes having a diameter ranging from 0.5 mm to 60 mm, it is suitable as the sensor for on-machine diameter measurement.…”

“…The laser detection technique is a nondestructive measuring tool based on the theory of laser diffraction or charge-coupled device (CCD) light projection. Laser detection techniques have been used in many industries, such as on-line detection of particle size in pharmaceuticals [19][20][21][22], production and detection of parts in manufacturing [23][24][25][26], and material determination in medicine [27]. Considering laser detection technique and its wider applications, the present study was conducted to develop an on-line analysis and monitoring system based on a high-detection sensitivity CCD laser micrometer for the quantitative visualization of droplets during the dripping process.…”
