Erythema exsudativum multiforme induced by granulocyte colony-stimulating factor in an allogeneic peripheral blood stem cell donor

Abstract: Summary:We describe a healthy peripheral blood stem cell (PBSC) donor who developed a cutaneous reaction, erythema exsudativum multiforme, during the administration of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) for mobilization. The cutaneous lesions were located on his hips, apart from the site of G-CSF injection. Treatment with topical corticosteroid was commenced, and the lesions resolved completely within a week. Adverse cutaneous reactions induced by G-CSF have been reported infrequently in healthy don… Show more

“…25 Several adverse cutaneous reactions (e.g. lymphocytic dermatitis and erythema exsudativum multiforme) have been reported in association with G-CSF administration; 26,27 thus, augmentation of glycation-driven G-CSF could become a potential risk factor for the prevalence of cutaneous reactions and sensitive skin. Intriguingly, we have also demonstrated low secretion of VEGF under glycation stress, which could impair neovascularization and diabetic wound repair.…”

“…In some instances, exacerbation of certain diseases, such as acne [21] or psoriasis [22, 23], has also been noted. More rarely, isolated cases of erythema nodosum [24], erythema multiforme [25, 26], epidermolysis bullosa acquisita [27] and pustular IgA linear dermatosis [28]have been published. In addition, a nonspecific rash due to lymphocyte activation in patients receiving GM-CSF and in healthy donors of stem cells from peripheral blood after G-CSF administration has been described [29].…”

“…The new assays developed were initially qualitative and they were able to detect CMV viremia in plasma of SCT recipients, and were compared with antigenemia assay (Boeckh et al, 1997;Boivin et al, 2000;Ksouri et al, 2007;Mori et al, 2000;Preiser et al, 2001). Results from Boivin et al found a higher sensitivity in antigenemia test, while Boeckh et al suggested a similar sensibility in both techniques.…”
