Erythema gyratum repens following COVID‐19 infection

Abstract: Erythema gyratum repens following COVID-19 infectionDear Editor, Erythema gyratum repens (EGR) is a rare figurate erythema, which presents as annular, erythematous concentric bands resembling wood grain. The diagnosis of EGR is based on clinical findings, supported by histologic findings. 1 Though EGR has been originally reported as a paraneoplastic syndrome, 2 in up to 20-30% of cases, it is associated with nonneoplastic causes, of which 1% are related to infection. 3 We report on a 71-year-old previously hea… Show more

“…3 In the literature, FE has only been linked with COVID-19 in 3 cases. [1][2][3] Picone et al 4 reported an erythematous manifestation that they termed "COVID arm," which was related to the RNA COVID-19 vaccine. Two cases of COVID-19-related FE in men of advanced age were diagnosed as EGR, and in both cases, the clinical findings were itchy, erythematous, annular, concentric lesions on the thighs, lower abdomen, and buttocks.…”

“…However, involvement of other organ systems has been reported. These include a wide range of cutaneous manifestations that have been described in several reports, including chilblains, chilblain-like lesions, acro-ischemic lesions, maculopapular rash, petechial and purpuric rash, herpetiform or vesicular lesions, urticaria or angioedema, livedo, necrosis, erythema multiforme-like lesions, pityriasis rosea-like lesions, pruritus, multisystem inflammatory syndrome, drug-related intertriginous and flexural exanthema, erythema gyratum repens (EGR), [1][2] and various nail and hair findings. [1][2] We herein report an unusual form of concentric figurate erythema (FE) as a delayed response to COVID-19, which may enrich the knowledge of COVID-19 on skin reaction.…”

“…In 2021, we had the opportunity to publish two cases of EGR related to COVID. 4,5 As previously published, 6 EGR should no longer be considered as an obligate paraneoplastic syndrome since not all the cases are associated. 4,5 In addition to search an underlying neoplasm, clinicians should be aware about such possibilities.…”
