Escalator-Related Injuries Among Children in the United States, 1990–2002

Abstract: There was a disproportionate number of escalator-related injuries among children who were younger than 5 years. Entrapment occurred more frequently among children who were younger than 5 years than in any other age group, which may explain the increased number of hand injuries in this age group. Escalator designs that reduce the gap between the steps and sidewall or shield against access to the gap may decrease entrapment risk. Young children should be supervised properly and should not be transported in a str… Show more

“…Caretakers should not attempt to wheel the child on the stairs and should instead use an elevator, if available, or carry the child while keeping their other hand on the railing. 22 More consideration should be given to making stairs safer and more userfriendly, such as increasing the length of stair "goings," 23 which are the horizontal depths of stair treads between vertical lines drawn from stair nosings (lead edges), in building codes. Missteps due to overstepping are a common cause of stair-related fall injuries.…”

“…Contrary to studies originating in the USA, no lawn-mower related amputations were observed7 13 due to the rarity of home lawn-mowing in Greece. Likewise, the relative rarity of sports equipment- and escalator-related injuries reflect the low rates of ‘working-out’21 and ‘frequenting of malls’22 in Greece.…”

“…[2122] Other causes of facial injuries in children include automobile accidents[23] escalator-related entrapment injuries, particularly in younger children. [24] Recently, severe injuries of the facial skeleton and soft tissues similar to the adults have been described in children's. [25] Alcohol intoxication is a major confounding factor for reduced level of consciousness in patients with head injury, and CT scan is recommended when the level of alcohol intoxication is enough to reduce their GCS.…”
