“…Glantz (1962), too, found a high incidence of tetracycline resistance, 100 of 158 strains, amongst pathogenic strains of E. coli isolated from diseased pigs in that country. Apart from this undesirable effect of tetracyclines employed nutritionally, it is becoming increasingly apparent that the frequent prophylactic or therapeutic use in a pig herd of any of the available anti-bacterial drugs eventually results in the particular drug becoming largely ineffective in the treatment of E. coli infections in that herd, and other drugs have to be used (Saunders et al, 1960;Aynsley, 1961;Davies, 1961;Smith and Jones, 1961). The inevitable outcome of the present policy of drug administration in pig herds as far as the therapy of E. coli infections is concerned is illustrated by the recent studies of Smi th (1966).…”
