Esophageal squamous papilloma lacks clear clinicopathological associations

Abstract: AIMTo determine the prevalence of esophageal squamous papillomas (ESPs) in a tertiary teaching hospital and to assess for any clinical associations, including relations with esophageal squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs).METHODSData from a total of 6962 upper gastrointestinal endoscopies over a five year period were retrospectively obtained and analysed.RESULTSESP was found in sixteen patients (0.23%). “…Previous studies report varying data when it comes to the most frequent locations for ESPs. Although Bohn et al 11 state that they found ESPs to be located mostly in the upper oesophageal region in their study, there are many more studies reporting that the most frequent location for ESPs is the middle and distal oesophagus 9,14 . Publications stating that ESPs are most frequently seen in the distal oesophagus also mention that the aetiology could be mucosal damage due to acid reflux 9,10,15,19 .…”

“…Comparison of studies on ESP published after 2000 with more than eight cases is given in Table 3. In previous studies, ESP prevalence was reported as 0.08%‐0.45% in Italy, 0.01% in France, 0.42% in Taiwan, 0.23% in Australia and 0.20% in Japan 4,5,13‐17 . In a previous study with the largest case series from Turkey at that time, 38 patients were determined to have squamous papilloma 18 .…”

“…Complications with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) have been reported [3][4][5][6]; however, the small absolute number of cases makes drawing any associations or conclusions between ESP and SCC difficult [12]. Review of the literature seems to suggest malignant potential appears highest in cases where the patient is symptomatic and has multiple lesions (papillomatosis), or a particularly large lesion [5,6].…”
