“…This will permit evaluating the role of direct and indirect mechanisms of access to the sources, which is a necessary step to produce more nuanced interpretations of prehistoric mobility and social interaction (Freund, ; Smith & Harvey, ). Going forward, our research will also articulate with ongoing studies of the formal variability and archaeometry of rock art (Barberena et al, ; Romero Villanueva, ). Building on this interdisciplinary research framework, we expect to track the prehistoric movement of objects and information, and to assess the spatial extent and nature of the social networks deployed by past human groups in this complex and fascinating region of the Patagonian Andes.…”

“…Our preliminary results also indicate that Laguna del Maule 2‐Río Barrancas type is discontinuously available along the Barrancas–Colorado basin and would be located between 5 and 25 km from the archaeological sites in our study region (Figure ). Laguna del Maule 1‐Laguna Negra, on the other hand, would be available at a minimum distance of 65 linear km from this region, and considerably farther following least‐cost paths (Barberena et al, ). Limited as these categories are (Gamble, ), Laguna del Maule 2‐Río Barrancas can be considered as “local” in terms of hunter‐gatherer mobility, whereas Laguna del Maule 1‐Laguna Negra should be considered “nonlocal” (Civalero & Franco, ; Gould, ; Meltzer, ).…”

“…We believe that these differences are good indicators to study mobility of hunter-gatherer groups around the whole territory. Currently we are investigating social interaction networks from the archeological point of view, from the determination of nodes and internodal spaces (i.e., in [34,35]), taking as a basis the circulation of raw materials and ornaments (i.e., in [10,36]). However, there are elements that we cannot explain from the point of view of circulation of raw materials, because they are really exceptional in archeological contexts and also because they have not been manufactured or used.…”
