Introduction: Understanding the diversity of sand flies is important for the epidemiology and control of leishmaniasis. This study aimed to understand the frequency, diversity, and seasonality of medically important sand flies in the municipality of Sinop, State of Mato Grosso, Brazil. Methods: The study was conducted in an urban area, including four ecotypes with different levels of urbanization. The sand flies were collected using light traps for three nights per month, from May 2014 to April 2015. Results: A total of 62,745 sand flies was collected, 52.34% of which were female. The frequency and diversity of sand flies was the highest in areas of permanent preservation (APPs) (96.85%), and was lower in more urbanized areas. Lutzomyia dasypodogeton was the most frequent species in the APPs. Lutzomyia antunesi was the most frequent in neighborhoods with forest fragments and neighborhoods around APPs, and L. aragaoi was the most frequent in completely urbanized neighborhoods. A higher frequency and diversity of sand flies was observed in the rainy season (87.92%) than in the dry season (12.08%). Eight medically important species were captured, and Lutzomyia antunesi, which is associated with American cutaneous leishmaniasis and visceral leishmaniasis, was observed in all ecotypes throughout the year. Conclusions: We observed a high frequency and diversity of sand flies in all urban areas, and some species collected were major vectors of leishmaniasis. These results support the need for further studies of the natural rates of infection of these insects and the circulation of the disease in hosts and vectors.

Resumen. Ciertas especies del género Lutzomyia transmiten la parasitosis llamada leishmaniasis en América. En Colombia se han reportado 153 especies del género. En Cundinamarca se tiene registro de 48 especies de Lutzomyia, de las cuales 13 especies son vectores confirmados y seis especies son sospechosas de transmitir la leishmaniasis. El objetivo del estudio fue describir la distribución geográfica de las especies de Lutzomyia y estimar su grado de asociación con factores ambientales, en base a los datos registrados durante el período 2000-2017 en el Laboratorio de Salud Pública de Cundinamarca. Se presenta la cartografía de la distribución de 40 especies de Lutzomyia en 342 localidades, 19 son nuevos registros para Cundinamarca. Se describen los rangos altitudinales y magnitudes de las asociaciones de las especies con respecto a domicilios humanos, fauna doméstica y coberturas vegetales asociadas. Esta información es fundamental para establecer medidas entomológicas y epidemiológicas eficaces de prevención y control contra la leishmaniasis.

The community structure of sand flies indicates the level of adaptation of vector species in a region, and in the context of vector management and control, this information allows for identifying the potential risks of pathogen transmission. This study aimed to analyze sand fly diversity and spatial-temporal distribution in an endemic area of cutaneous leishmaniasis. The study was carried out in the Carrizales hamlet (Caldas), between September 2019 and October 2021. The monthly distribution of sand fly species was evaluated through collections with CDC traps. Shannon and evenness indices were calculated and used to compare species frequencies at each house. The association between climatic variables and the frequency of sand flies was evaluated using Spearman’s correlation. A total of 6,265 females and 1,958 males belonging to 23 species were found. Low diversity and evenness were observed, with the dominance of Nyssomyia yuilli yuilli (Young & Porter). Ecological and diversity indices did not reveal differences between the houses. The sand fly community was composed of 3 dominant species, Ny. yuilli yuilli, Psychodopygus ayrozai (Barretto & Coutinho), and Ps. panamensis (Shannon), representing 75.8% of the total catches. No statistical association was found between the absolute frequency of sand flies, rainfall, and temperature. The results show one dominant species, this fact has epidemiological relevance since density influences parasite-vector contact. The high densities of sand flies recorded in peri- and intradomiciliary areas highlight the necessity of periodic monitoring of vector populations and control activities to reduce the risk of Leishmania transmission in this endemic area.
