Espinoza, M. I. and Aronczyk, M. Big Data for Climate Action or Climate Action for Big Data?

Abstract: Results:In Group 1 with expectant management 8 cases (47.1%) had have a favorable outcome, in 5 cases (29.4%) were spontaneous cessation of blood flow in the umbilical vessels in acardiac-twin. There were 9 patients (52.9%) with adverse outcome in Group 1 -in 3 cases (17.6%) were unpredictable demise of the pump-twin before 16 weeks, in 6 cases were progression of heart failure and polyhydramnios. The mean gestational age at delivery in Group 1 was 32.3 ± 5.4 weeks. 28 patients (Group 2) underwent fetal surger… Show more

“…If all objects should undergo a magnetic field amplification during the proto-NS phase (caused by the rapid rotation, convection and/or turbulence, see discussion in Torres-Forné et al 2016), CCOs should have accreted much more material to submerge its amplified fields than other isolated NSs. Secondly, in the framework of magnetic dipole losses, the measured braking indices are mostly less than 3 (Espinoza 2013. except that of PSR J1640−4631, Gao et al 2017), which is not readily accounted for by the magneto-thermal evolution model.…”

“…Measurement of the braking indices was inhibited by timing noise, glitches, and limited spans of timing observations (e.g., Gavriil & Kaspi 2004;Dib et al 2008), except for a handful of young pulsars with relatively stable long-term spin-down (Espinoza 2013;Gao et al 2016;Gao et al 2017, and references therein). Most of the measured braking indices < 3, deviating from that in the magnetic dipole losses model.…”

“…At the very least, such information helps to raise awareness. In 2012, 2014 and 2017 the French telecommunications service Orange (former France Télécom) and a US American data innovation hub and knowledge center hosted a data development challenge with leading technology companies and data scientists to demonstrate the importance of private sector and personal data in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (Espinoza and Aronczyk, 2021).…”

“…While governments consider digitalization as an asset in developing sustainable strategies, internationally operating tech companies like Microsoft and Apple are hoping to sell climate-friendly AI applications that contribute to securing the standard of living of future generations. Both have then a great interest in making the public aware of the benefits of digital technologies in questions of sustainability (Espinoza and Aronczyk, 2021). In this sense, digitalization is seen as 'problem solver' for climate change (Bieser et al, 2020).…”

“…It may act as a cudgel in acrimonious political campaigns, as organizations publicly attack the opacity of their opponents. Conversely, it is sometimes deployed as a form of consensus or compromise, advocated as a managerial, rather than adversarial, approach to resolving contentious issues (Aronczyk & Espinoza, 2020). Most important-and least explored in recent scholarship-transparency can itself be appropriated as a publicity tactic.…”
