Show more

“…On malignancies of genital organs, our search showed that MGS has been reported among travellers and those emigrating from endemic areas, apart from testicular or scrotal schistosomiasis simulating neoplasia (Alexis and Domingo, 1986; Cohen et al, 1995; Ma and Srigley, 1995; Basilio-de-Oliveira et al, 2002; Bacelar et al, 2007; Lopes et al, 2007; Figueiredo et al, 2015). Prostatic adenocarcinoma has been observed to occur together with Schistosoma ova, resulting in epithelial granulomata, marked fibrosis and organ enlargement, which have been described in reports of tissue histopathology and cancer spread to other genital organs affected by MGS.…”

“…Schistosomiasis has been associated with some forms of neoplasias 29 . The most striking association occurs in areas with a high prevalence of urinary schistosomiasis due to S. haematobium, such as Africa and the Middle East.…”

“…The most striking association occurs in areas with a high prevalence of urinary schistosomiasis due to S. haematobium, such as Africa and the Middle East. In these regions there is a predominance of squamous cell carcinoma of the bladder, a relatively rare form of cancer in non-endemic regions 29,30 . In China, where colorectal cancer reaches relatively high incidence rates in endemic areas, the association between this type of neoplasia and diffuse colitis due to S. japonicum infection has also been suggested 30,31 .…”

“…Several biological factors such as bacterial infections and immunological status are implicated in predisposing individuals to bladder cancer [3] [4] and there are several well-documented relationships between infections with certain parasites and the development of cancer, in particular schistosomiasis and bladder cancer [5] [6]. It is well known that the relationship between squamous cell carcinoma and bladder infection by Schistosoma haematobium occurs mainly among women.…”
