Essential oil constituents of aerial parts of Artemisia scoparia Waldst. & Kit.

Abstract: Hydrodistilled oil obtained from the aerial parts of Artemisia scoparia Waldst. & Kit. was analysed by capillary GC and GC-MS. The volatile oil of the 10-15 cm high herb was composed mainly of eight monoterpenes (ca. 68.5%), and the predominant constituents were β-myrcene (24.4%), γ-terpinene (18.3%), neral (12.5%) and cis-p-mentha-2-en-1-ol (5.1%). Among seven sesquiterpenes (6.9%) present in the oil, the prominent one was β-caryophyllene (3.4%). p-Cymene (17.4%) and p-cymene-8-ol were the characterized aroma… Show more

“…β-myrcene (30.2%), β-cymene (12.8%), and (+)-limonene (12.4%) were the main monoterpenes of the fresh leaves of A. scoparia , collected during the last week of June in northern India (Chandigarh) [ 57 ]. Moreover, the major components from the volatile oils were β-myrcene (24.4%), β-terpinene (18.3%), and neral (12.5%) in northern India (New Delhi) [ 58 ]. Essential oils have very complex ingredients, containing 20–60 components in different concentrations [ 59 , 60 ]; previous studies have been conducted on which ingredients work.…”

“…Kapoor et al determined that the major components of A. scoparia oil from India were β-myrcene, γ-terpinene, pcymene, and neral. 28 Hydrocarbon monoterpenoids were the predominant class of compounds. In A. scoparia volatiles from India monoterpenoids amounted to about half of the total oil content and γ-terpinene and eugenol were the most abundant constituents.…”
