Essential oil of Piper callosum , Piper hispidum and Piper marginatum (Piperaceae) possesses in vitro efficacy against monogeneans of Colossoma macropomum (tambaqui)

Abstract: Global fish production is estimated to have reached around 179 million tons in 2018, of which 156 million tons were destined for human consumption, or 20.5 kg per capita/year. Aquaculture was responsible for 46% of total production, and 52% of fish for human consumption (FAO -Food & Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, 2020). Thus, fish farming directly or indirectly generates millions of jobs and produces several species of fish.Tambaqui Colossoma macropomum (Cuvier, 1818), the second most cultivat… Show more

“…Similar results have also been reported for the EO of shell ginger (Alpinia zerumbet) [20]. Moreover, the EOs from three plants of the genus Piper (Piperaceae) have been found to possess in vitro anthelmintic activity against monogeneans [21]. Therefore, the use of natural EOs or their molecules may provide a promising alternative for controlling monogenean infections in aquaculture.…”

“…The environmental and health concerns caused by the use of chemical anthelmintics for disease control and the emergence of drug resistance have prompted researchers to search for effective alternatives [8,25]. Plant-derived and environment-friendly essential oils may be an ideal substitute, and many essential oils have been reported to be effective against monogenean [16,20,21]. Therefore, to search for safe and efficient anthelmintic agents for the control of monogenean infection, in this study, anthelmintic efficacy of 16 kinds of EOs was investigated, and the effects of the two EOs with superior anthelmintic activity, namely palmarosa oil and curcuma oil, on the survival of G. kobayashii and goldfish were also researched.…”

“…Piper hispidum Sw. is an herbaceous plant that spreads in several tropical and subtropical countries in Central and South America [ 57 ]. This plant is known by the names “cordoncillo” (Mexico), “bayuoyo” (Cuba), and “jaborandi” (Brazil) [ 58 , 59 ]. This plant is a shrub that has alternating leaves, green cylindrical stems, and roots with sclereids in the parenchyma [ 60 ].…”

“…However, with the intensification of this activity, fish can become more susceptible to diseases due to stress and poor water quality, which mainly favor the proliferation of parasites that lead to diseases ( Tavares-Dias, 2021 ). Aquaculture therefore needs technological innovations to improve the sanitary management of farmed fish, avoiding parasitic outbreaks and economic losses, which are among the main obstacles to the development of this activity in industrial scale ( Luz et al, 2021 ; Alves et al, 2021 ; Malheiros et al, 2022 ). Thus, there is a growing search for ecologically friendly treatment, such as the use of oils derived from medicinal plants against parasites of fish ( Gonzales et al, 2020 ; Barriga et al, 2020 ).…”

“…Thus, the essential oil of this medicinal plant has been investigated as a source of new natural therapeutic products with potential antifungal, antioxidant, antiplasmodial and trypanocidal activity ( Silva et al, 2014 ). Alves et al (2021) demonstrated that P. hispidum essential oil had in vitro efficacy against monogeneans; however, this essential oil has not been used to control and treatment of fish parasites. In fish, the search for new anthelmintic treatments to control and treatment of parasitic diseases using bioactive principles from medicinal plants has showed beneficial results ( Corral et al, 2018 ; Santos et al, 2018 ; Majolo et al, 2019 ; Barriga et al, 2020 ; Alves et al, 2021 ; Malheiros et al, 2022 ).…”
