Essential Oil Profiling of Centella asiatica (L.) Urb.-A Medicinally Important Herb

Abstract: The Centella asiatica is known as Gotukola. The essential oil is extracted by Clevenger apparatus. The oil yield from whole plant C. asiatica is 0.8 mL in 1 Kg. The essential oil is analyzed by GC-MS. There are 43 volatile compounds are identified from essential oil of C. asiatica. P-Cymene-(44%) is the predominant compound in essential oil of C. asiatica.

“…Polyphenol compounds in cinnamon play a role in increasing the synthesis of endogenous antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase and glutathione peroxidase that play a role in preventing, inhibiting, breaking and stopping the chain of free radical reactions (Qotbi, 2016;Simsek et al, 2013;Mehdipour et al, 2013). Francis and Thomas (2016); Roy et al (2013) indicated that gotu kola, contains various active compounds, including asiaticoside, asiatic acid, madecassoside, madecassic acid, and brahmoside. Falasifah et al (2018) stated that gotu kola plants are known to have essential oils, such as citronella, linalool, neral, menthol, and linalyl acetate.…”

“…The GC-MS spectra revealed forty components, accounting for 99.12% of the oil content. The GC-MS analysis of essential oil also reported p-cymene (44%) as a major constituent [87]. The GC-MS of essential oil chiefly contains sesquiterpenes (68.80%), comprising α-humulene (21.06%), β-caryophyllene (19.08%), bicyclogermacrene (11.22%), germacrene B (6.29%) and germacrene D (4.01%) [88].…”

“…Centelloid was term given for different constituents of secondary metabolites produced by plant which mainly comprised of pentacyclic triterpenoid saponins [9]. P-cymene-(44%) along with other volatile compounds was found to be in a prominent amount in the essential oil of C. asiatica on analysis with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) [10]. Centellin, asiatic, and centellicin were isolated from the aerial part of the plant, and further, their structures had been determined using 2D nuclear magnetic resonance technique [11].…”
