Essential oils of leaves, inflorescences and infructescences of spontaneousCotinus coggygria Scop. from Greece

Abstract: The essential oils from the leaves, inflorescences and infructescences of Cotinus coggygria (Anacardiaceae) from three localities in Greece were analysed by GC-MS. Forty-nine components were characterized. Monoterpenes were the dominating chemical class in all the samples analysed.

“…In the oils from Hungary the main constituents were limonene 30.0–40.0%, α-pinene 24.4–34.3%, β-pinene 7.6–20.2%, Δ3-carene 4.6–11.0%, and α-terpinolene 3.3–10.6% (Hethelyi et al, 1986). In the oils from Greece the main components were different in different samples: in the first oil, the main constituents were limonene 67.4%, α-pinene 14.7%, and terpinolene 8.6%; in the second, myrcene 32.0%, sabinene 18.0%, and α-pinene 15.9%; in the third oil, main components were sabinene 24.2%, myrcene 14.0%, limonene 10.9% and terpin-4-ol 10.9% (Tzakou et al, 2005).…”

“…Cotinus coggygria contains an essential oil which mainly consists of monoterpenes (Demirci et al ., ; Tzakou et al ., ; Novaković et al ., ), a high amount of hydrolysable tannins, gallic acid, methyl gallate, pentagalloyl glucose (Westenburg et al ., ) and flavonoids, glycosides of myricetin, quercetin and kaempferol (Buziashvili et al ., ). Three aurones (disulfuretin, sulfuretin and sulfurein) possessing antioxidant activity (DPPH radical scavenging activity) were isolated from C. coggygria (Westenburg et al ., ).…”

“…Limonene dominates in plants from Serbia (Novaković et al, 2007) and Italy (Fraternale and Ricci, 2014). In Greek smoketree, the main components varied according to the site, with limonene being dominant in some samples and myrcene in others (Tzakou et al, 2005). Site-specific variations have as well been pointed out in Turkey, where limonene (Demirici et al, 2003), alpha-pinene (Ulukanli et al, 2014) or geranyl acetate (Bahadirli, 2020) were be the main components.…”
