Establishing Compliance With Liquid Medication Administration in a Child With Autism

Abstract: Children with autism often display difficulty with swallowing pills and liquid medications. In the current study, stimulus fading and positive reinforcement established compliance with liquid medication administration in a young boy with autism. The boy's mother eventually administered liquid medication on her own.

“…The participant received a highly preferred item contingent upon arm motion control. In another study, Schiff et al () successfully established compliance to liquid medication administration in a child with autism using stimulus fading and contingent reinforcement. The stimulus fading procedure was composed of 54 steps (e.g., syringe proximity, syringe in mouth, water syringe emptied in mouth, etc.).…”

“…Although the prevalence of emotional responses to an MRI scan for individuals with developmental or intellectual disabilities is currently unknown, the high prevalence of anxiety disorders in this population (Simonoff et al, ) suggests that an appropriate intervention should address both motion reduction and the habituation or prevention of emotional responses. In this regard, stimulus fading procedures (i.e., gradual modification of the physical characteristics of the antecedent) have been found effective in promoting compliance with fear‐provoking medical procedures (e.g., Schiff, Tarbox, Lanagan, & Farag, ; Shabani & Fisher, ).…”

“…The current study evaluated procedures similar to the initial steps of the Mangold () program, but with the goal of incorporating greater space between characters. To that end we used stimulus fading, an approach shown to be effective at teaching a variety of skills (e.g., de Graaff, Verhoeven, Bosman, & Hasselman, ; Schiff, Tarbox, Lanagan, & Farag, ).…”
