“…The HBF cell line has been established using the explant technique instead of enzymatic digestion methods as it has many advantages such as speed, ease, lesser damage to the cell surface and maintenance of cell interactions when compared to cell suspensions (Avella et al 1994). The explant culture technique was found to be the suitable method for developing primary cell cultures from H. brachysoma as observed in previous works on development of cell lines from L. calcarifer, Cyprinus carpio, Etroplus suratensis, Puntius denisonii and Puntius fasciatus, (Lakra et al 2010a, b;Swaminathan et al 2010Swaminathan et al , 2012Swaminathan et al , 2013Chaudhary et al 2013). The HBF cell line maintained stable growth for more than 62 passages, over a period of 2 years.…”

“…Cells died within a few hours when the culture temperature was shifted to 45°C (data not shown). A number of cell lines developed from freshwater fishes are known to grow best at 28-30°C (Tong et al 1997;Luc Rougee et al 2007;Ahmed et al 2009;Ku et al 2009;Swaminathan et al 2013). Ossum et al (2004) also reported that cells from warm water fishes can grow at 15-37°C incubation temperature.…”

“…The cells showed good growth in L-15 culture medium containing 15% FBS at 28°C. L-15 has been used as a common cell culture medium for growth of cells derived from various fish (Qin et al 2006;Lakra et al 2010;Swaminathan et al 2013). The growth of CCKF cells was influenced by the concentration of FBS, and we chose 15% FBS as optimum for CCKF culture.…”

“…They have been cultured in China for several 100 years and are still the most commonly kept fish in home aquariums. In recent years, they have been known to play an important role in the international fish trade (Swaminathan et al 2013); altogether, approximately 1800 strains of goldfish are traded (Silas et al 2011). With the development of goldfish aquaculture, several viruses in goldfish have been reported (Becker et al 2014;Stephens et al 2004;Xu et al 2013), including goldfish virus type 1 (GFV 1) (Berry et al 1983), goldfish virus type 2 (GFV 2) (Shea 1983;Shea and Berry 1984), herpes-type viruses (Jung and Miyazaki 1995), and it is likely that more exist.…”
