“…Biomarkers of exposure include metals in the biological matrices, such as toenails, bone, hair, urine, blood, exhaled breath condensate, fish otoliths [ear bones], and scales [ 17 , 45 , 46 , 47 , 48 , 49 , 50 , 51 , 52 , 53 ], with REE signatures being detected in penguin feathers [ 54 ]. Molecular initiating events occur when a compound and biomolecule or biosystem interact.…”

“…This is due to a lack of distinguishable annuli, as growth increments can become indiscernible through resorption and reformation, or erosion at the edge of the scale (Buckmeier et al 2017). Whitledge et al (2022) estimated the ages of wild Black Carp in the Mississippi River through annual formation of growth increments from a suite of fin rays and vertebrae. Lapilli otoliths were used for stable isotope and microchemistry analyses to determine natal origin in this study and were therefore unavailable for comparison.…”

“…Structures including scales, otoliths, vertebrae, fin rays, and spines have been compared for numerous fish species to identify methods of age estimation that reduce processing time and provide consistent or precise results among readers (Sylvester and Berry 2006;Spiegel et al 2010;Seibert and Phelps 2013;Klein et al 2017;Quist et al 2022). Black Carp Mylopharyngodon piceus is an emerging invasive species in North America with a reproducing population in the Mississippi River represented by several cohorts of wild origin fish (Whitledge et al 2022). Black Carp are a benthic invertivore (Poulton et al 2019) with specially adapted molariform teeth for consumption of hard-shelled mollusk prey (Nico et al 2005).…”
