Establishment of survivable connections in WDM networks using partial path protection

Abstract: Abstract-As a generalization of the traditional path protection scheme in WDM networks where a backup path is needed for each active path, the partial path protection scheme uses a collection of backup paths to protect an active path, where each backup path in the collection protects one or more links on the active path such that every link on the active path is protected by one of the backup paths. While there is no known polynomial time algorithm for computing an active path and a corresponding backup path u… Show more

“…Shared partial path protection, first proposed in [4], is another scheme to provide protection to satisfy reliability or survivability requirements. Note that the definition of partial path protection in [17] is different from the definition in this article. To the best of our knowledge, apart from some improvements on full path protection to overcome traps [10] and other protection schemes for 100% SRLG failure protection [13], the idea of using partial path protection against SRLG failures coupled with as high as possible survivability has not been studied.…”

“…The term partial-protection has been used to refer to various reliability-aware provisioning schemes [4,15,16]. Some of these studies have considered link-level protection [15,16], however, in this paper we study path-level partial-protection [4].…”

“…Dedicated protection devotes backup resources for the primary connection, unavailable to any other entity [8]. Two common dedicated protection methods are; 1+1 method where data is transmitted simultaneously on primary and backup path and 1:1 method where data is transmitted in the primary path only, with idle or low traffic priority backup path.…”

“…LP reserves backup path for each primary path channel. PPP groups backup paths in a domain to collectively protect all channels on the primary path segment [8] that traverses within the same domain [10]. PPP can achieve a high scalability and faster recovery time compared to PP for a modest sacrifice in resource utilization, but still slower than LP [10].…”
