BackgroundThe underlying cause of death is used to study country and global mortality trends and profiles. The final cause of death could also inform the ultimately cause of death in individuals with underlying conditions. Whether there is a pattern between the underlying and final cause of death has not been explored using national death registries. We studied what final causes of death were most common among selected underlying causes using national death registries in Peru, 2015.MethodsUnderlying and final causes of death were classified according to their ICD-10 codes. Underlying causes included chronic kidney disease (CKD), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), hypertension (HTN), diabetes, and selected cancers (cervix, breast, stomach, prostate, and lung). Final causes were categorized as: communicable, cardiovascular, and cancers. Descriptive statistics were used.ResultsA total of 77,065 death registries were analyzed; cases had a mean age of 69.4 (SD: 19.3) years at death and were mostly men (53.9%). When the underlying cause was HTN, the most frequent final cause was cardiovascular diseases (82.3%). For all the other underlying causes, the most frequent final cause was communicable diseases: COPD (86.4%), CKD (79.3%), cancer (76.5%), and diabetes (68.3%).ConclusionsIn four selected underlying causes of death there was a divergence with respect to the final cause, suggesting there was a shift from non-communicable to communicable causes. Although efforts should be deployed to prevent underlying non-communicable diseases, potential communicable complications should not be neglected.

Herein, we provide, for the first time, a snapshot of the morbidity, mortality and cancer pattern from a regional hospital that cares for the rural and low-income population from Northern Peru (Chimbote), where morbidity, mortality and cancer profile are not in line with the national reports [ 13 ]. Of note, cancer screening methods are not fully implemented, and genetic services are scarce.…”

We provide an overview of the challenges that low-resource setting cities are facing, including a lack of global implementation of cancer screening programs, accurate data and statistics that may aid the health authorities and guide future public health activities, as well as reorient strategies, interventions and budgets to promote lifestyles that help prevent disease. Current cancer care does not fully reflect ethnic, cultural, environmental and resource differences. Herein, we described a snapshot of the cancer mortality and morbidity from a hospital that cares a rural and low-income population from Peru, called Chimbote (316,966 inhabitants) and showed the limitation of access to oncological care and genetic services. The city is located in the region of Ancash, which is a department of Northern Peru. Of note, we identified a greater proportion of cancer cases than previously described, with a young age of onset and differential profile of the most frequent cancers. With the emergence of increasingly effective interventions, it becomes paramount that populations living in resource-limited settings have access to cancer services and participate in genetics and genomic research.

En el año 2018, hasta la cuarta semana epidemiológica (SE 04) comprendida del 21 al 27 de enero, de acuerdo al Boletín Epidemiológico (Ordoñez, 2018) en comparación con el 2017, se observó un decremento del 2,5%, pese a ello, en el departamento de Junín se reportó un incremento de 38,4% y, un 6,7% de episodios de Asma notificados, con mayor incidencia en los departamentos Tacna con 118,2%; siendo el Callao con mayor índice acumulativo.…”

El trabajo tiene como objetivo determinar la eficacia de la estrategia lúdica basada en juegos de azar, para la enseñanza de la prevención de infecciones respiratorias agudas en los estudiantes del nivel primario. Metodológicamente se trató de una investigación cuantitativa de tipo exploratoria-explicativa. La población de estudio fue la Institución Educativa San Lorenzo Conchamarca de Huánuco, Perú durante el año 2016. Se trabajó con una muestra de 45 estudiantes de 10 a 12 años, distribuidos en tres grupos para aplicar de forma diferenciada los juegos didácticos: a) Gusanito de la salud, b) Ruleta de la salud, c) Yincana, donde se abordaron los mensajes sobre medidas preventivas de las infecciones respiratorias agudas. Se utilizó un cuestionario y lista de chequeo antes y después de la intervención. Para el análisis estadístico se aplicó ANOVA de un factor y test de Scheffé para contraste de grupos. Los resultados demuestran que, de las tres actividades, la ruleta de la salud resulta ser más eficaz en este tipo de investigaciones con una puntuación en una escala del 1 al 20 que se encuentra entre 11,17 y 11,5 luego de la aplicación. Dentro de las conclusiones destaca que, los juegos de azar demostraron ser efectivos para crear en los estudiantes conciencia de prevención, a la par que reforzaron sus conocimientos respecto a las IRA, con lo que pueden llegar a ser multiplicadores de las medidas preventivas aprendidas.
