Esters of Aromatic Mono‐, Di‐, and Tricarboxylic Acids, Aromatic Diacids and Di‐, Tri‐, Or Polyalcohols

Abstract: The simple aliphatic esters of benzoic acid are liquids used as solvents, flavors, or perfumes. The arylbenzoate benzyl is used as a miticide or plasticizer. In general, these compounds have a low order of toxicity. The primary effect expected from ingestion of moderate amounts of benzoates is gastrointestinal irritation, gastric pain, nausea, and vomiting. Available data indicate a low order of skin absorbability, and the undiluted materials may be either slight or moderate skin irritants. In rabbits, the deg… Show more

“…Thus, phthalates can enter the environmental cycles or the human body directly. Phthalates also are used as industrial solvents and lubricants, additives in the textile industry, in pesticide formulations and as components in personal-care products (David et al 2001;EC 2008). One of them, dibutyl phthalate (DBP), is also used in the pharmaceutical field as a constituent of the enteric coating of some medications (Hauser et al 2004).…”

“…High molecular weight phthalates, for example, di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), are primarily used as plasticizers in the manufacture of flexible vinyl plastic, which in turn, is used in consumer products, flooring and wall coverings, food contact applications, and medical devices (55,56). Manufacturers use low molecular weight phthalates (e.g., diethyl phthalate [DEP] and dibutyl phthalate [DBP]) in personal care products (e.g., perfumes, lotions, cosmetics), as solvents and plasticizers for cellulose acetate, and in making lacquers, varnishes, and coatings, including those used to provide timed releases in some pharmaceuticals (55,57,58).…”
