Aim: The present study was carried out to evaluate the efficacy of laser-assisted lip repositioning for gummy smile correction. Materials and methods: This was a prospective study with sample size of 10 patients with a gummy smile of more than 3 mm. Clinical assessment of pre-and postoperative lip length at rest and at smile was done. Analysis of variance (ANOVA), Tukey test and Chi-square test were used for statistical tabulation. Results: On assessing, the mean value of pre-op gingival display was 5.4 mm , postoperative 6 months showed a mean value of 1.9 mm The results were statistically significant. Measurement of lip length showed pre-op mean value of 19.20 mm at rest and 14.20 mm at smile; postoperative results at 6 months was estimated at 20.1 mm at rest and 15.7 mm while smiling, p=0.460 lip length at rest and p= 0.082 lip length at smile. Conclusion: It is an efficient technique for correction of gummy smile and an excellent alternative to more costly procedures with high morbidity rates. It is also minimally invasive with minimal postoperative swelling and pain. But extensive research is definitely imperative so as to increase its range of application.

Background: High tension on the frenum in some cases may generate chronic inflammation. Chronic inflammation can trigger gingival enlargement, thereby resulting in unfavorable aesthetic appearance. Frenotomy and gingivectomy are surgical procedures that are often performed in periodontics field to overcome such condition. The use of lasers in frenectomy/frenotomy and gingivectomy methods is still uncommon but more convenient than using a scalpel. Diode lasers exhibit several advantages over conventional methods because it can control the bleeding and is also painless that may reduce the need of anesthesia. Objectives: To report the likelihood of diode lasers instead of conventional methods using scalpels in frenotomy and gingivectomy for aesthetic corrections. Case: A 20-years-old female patient arrived at Periodontics Department of Airlangga University to repair gums in upper and lower jaw region. Patient felt less confident with the state of her gum which discerned to cover the portion of her teeth and wished to receive surgical treatment for aesthetics improvement. No involvement of systemic disease and drug consumption was noted in this case. Case Management: The management of such aberrant frenum was accomplished by performing labial frenotomy and removing enlarged tissues which is a common surgical procedure in the field of periodontics. Dental lasers are currently being employed in manyfields of periodontics, providing alternatives to traditional scalpel techniques. Conclusion: Surgical treatment in cases of aberrant frenum and gingival enlargement using diode lasers (Epic X, Biolase) for aesthetic correction provides satisfactory results with minimum pain and rapid healing. Background: Crown lengthening is a surgical procedure that apically positions the gingival edge and/or removes supporting bone in order to increase the amount of supra gingival tooth structure for restorative or cosmetic purposes. The objective of the study: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of the 940nm diode laser in esthetic crown lengthening surgery through clinical observations, patient questionnaires, clinical photographs, and gingival healing following gingival operations. Material and methods: In this randomized clinical trial, 16 patients (11 females and 5 males) had their crowns surgically lengthened using a diode laser (940 nm) in continuous wave (CW) mode with 1 watt energy settings. A visual analogue scale is used on the first, third, seventh, and twenty-first days following surgery to record pain, swelling, bleeding, functional interference, tooth sensitivity, and success from an aesthetic standpoint, as well as overall patient satisfaction based on patient opinion and clinical photographs. Results: In the present study, we noticed that the scale of pain, bleeding, oedema, function interferance, and tooth sensitization significantly decreased gradually during the first two visits. The measured parameters completely disappeared after one week in most cases, as well as increase patient satisfaction and aesthetic achievement. The patients were recalled three weeks later, the wounds had totally healed, and the patient were not complaining of any pain. Conclusion: Crown lengthening requires optimal gingival margin design. This involves precise shaping of delicate tissues, which is difficult with the scalpel. While Lasers give improved gingival sculpting control and can be used for aesthetic crown lengthening. The laser surgery has many advantages, including excellent hemostasis with little or no bleeding, being less invasive and sterile wound cut, causing less pain and suffering during and after surgery, and enhancing patient satisfaction since the operation is short and, in most circumstances, relatively painless. Also, in laser surgery, there is less functional interruption and enhanced patient satisfaction since a periodontal pack is not needed to cover the surgery site. The healing is faster and more aesthetic when using laser surgery procedure.
