Estimated Levels of Environmental Contamination and Health Risk Assessment for Herbicides and Insecticides in Surface Water of Ceará, Brazil

Abstract: Methodology using solid phase extraction and high performance liquid chromatography (SPE-C18/HPLC-DAD) was applied to pesticide determinations in ten water reservoirs in the semidarid region of northeastern Brazil. The validated method was suitable for determination of herbicides and insecticide in surface water. The recovery efficiency of atrazine, methyl-parathion and simazine was approximately 70%. The method also showed good linearity and selectivity with correlation coefficients (R) greater than 0.99. The… Show more

“…The maximum allowable atrazine concentrations in drinking water range from 0.1 to 3 μg L −1 in most regions, particularly in Europe, Asia and America (Singh et al, 2018). A recent monitoring study of atrazine across the Ceará state in Brazil revealed mean atrazine concentrations of 7-15 μg L −1 in reservoir water (Sousa et al, 2016).…”

“…Particularly in Brazilian rivers, the presence of ATZ has often registered at permitted levels (2 µg/L) established by the Brazilian National Council of the Environment (CONAMA) [ 4 - 7 ]. However, ATZ was found above this level in several hydrographic basins in different regions of Brazil, ranging from a concentration of 2.7 µg/L [ 8 ], 10.4 µg/L [ 9 ], and 15.0 µg/L [ 10 ] up to 18.9 µg/L [ 11 ].…”

“…Studies of atrazine in aquatic ecosystems from different regions have shown values ranging from less than 0.001 up to 1000 µg·L -1 (Graymore et al, 2001;USGS, 2000;Battaglin et al, 2009;Sangchan et al, 2014;Botelho et al, 2015;Sousa et al, 2016;Fingler et al, 2017;Starr et al, 2017). Therefore, the results of the present study showed that atrazine, at environmentally relevant concentrations, is a contaminant capable of triggering the avoidance response in the fish P. reticulata.…”
