Estimates of the Number of People Living with HIV in Italy

Abstract: Objective. To estimate the HIV prevalence and the number of people living with HIV (PLHIV) in Italy with a projection for 2020. Methods. Two methods elaborated by Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) were used: Estimate and Projection Package and Spectrum. Results. A total of 123,000 (115,000–145,000) individuals aged 15 or more were estimated to be living with HIV in Italy at the end of 2012 and the estimated HIV prevalence was 0.28 (0.24–0.32) per 100 residents aged 15 or more. In 2012, the e… Show more

“…The estimated number of PLHIV of about 114,812-156,910 is similar to the estimate (110,000-140,000) ob-tained for Italy in 2012 using the EPP/Spectrum package of the UNAIDS 23,24 : this package incorporates surveillance data, results of prevalence surveys, and national demographic data in a mathematical model that generates estimates of prevalent cases and incidence trends over time. It must be stressed that in the HIV care continuum the estimated number of PLHIV depends on the proportion of people undiagnosed or not linked to care.…”

“…Italy, with about 60 million of inhabitants (201 inhabitants per square kilometer) and about four thousand new diagnoses of HIV infection annually, contributes significantly to outline the profile of the HIV epidemic in EU. A total of 123000 (115000–145000) individuals aged 15 or more were estimated to be living with HIV/AIDS in Italy at the end of 2012 . The estimated HIV prevalence among adults in Italy in 2012 was 0.28 (0.24–0.32) per 100 residents aged 15 or more.…”

“…In Italia, ad oggi, sono state stimate circa 123.000 (115.000-145.000) persone che vivono con l'infezione da HIV-1 (6). Il costo per singolo paziente ammonta a circa 10,000€ l'anno.…”
