Estimating a Logit Model With Randomized Data: The Case of Cocaine Use

Abstract: S u m m a r yIn his influential book, Maddala (1983) suggests combining randomized response survey data with other personal information to estimate logit models predicting immoral, unpopular, or unlawful behaviour. This study is one of the first t o implement this technique using real data. Models of college students' recent cocaine use are estimated with academic performance and socio-economic characteristics as determinants. Parameter estimates obtained from randomized response suweys are compared t o those … Show more

“…See Berrens et al (1997) and Kerkvliet (1994) The percentage of seating that owners allocate to nonsmoking use NS i is expected to exert a negative influence on the probabil ity that revenues will fall since this variable indicates how many nonsmokers are served. Whether an establishment is a member of a corporate chain is expected to influence responses if chain members offer greater accommodation of smokers and nonsmokers as an element of overall corporate strategy.…”

“…In addition to theoretical developments, some comparative researches have shown that RR techniques generally result in more valid responses, see, for example, Umesh and Peterson (1991), Scheers (1992), Hosseini and Armacost (1993), Kerkvliet (1994), Singh et al (1996), Landsheer et al (1999 and Van der Heijden (2000).…”

“…The collection of data through personal interview surveys on sensitive issues such as induced abortions, drug abuse, and family income is a serious issue; see for example Fox and Tracy (1986) and Kerkvliet (1994). Warner (1965) considered a case in which the respondents in a population can be divided into two mutually exclusive groups: one group with stigmatizing/sensitive characteristic A and the other group without it.…”
