Estimating a normal reference range for serum B‐cell maturation antigen levels for multiple myeloma patients

Abstract: Summary The serum B‐cell maturation antigen (sBCMA) has been identified as a novel serum biomarker for patients with multiple myeloma. However, no study has yet established a reference range for sBCMA levels. Its levels were determined in 196 healthy subjects and showed a right‐tailed distribution with a median value of 37·51 ng/ml with a standard deviation of 22·54 ng/ml (range 18·78–180·39 ng/ml). Partitioning of subgroup reference ranges was considered but determined to be irrelevant. A non‐parametric metho… Show more

“…In order to establish the normal range for this study, we evaluated 205 healthy donors with a median age of 62 years (range, 24–87), which was similar to that of our MM patients, and determined a median normal sBCMA level of 37·51 ng/ml (standard deviation, 22·54 ng/ml) 14 . sBCMA levels were found to be independent of age, sex and race within this control population.…”

“…The incidence of SLE is significantly higher in females than males. Previous studies in MM indicated that sBCMA levels are independent of gender, age, serum β-2M, hemoglobin, and creatinine, 12,35 enabling its reliable clinical exploitation as a biomarker. However, adult cohorts are unrepresentative of children.…”

“…In fact, the first normal reference range was proposed (<82Á59 ng/ml), based on the determination of sBCMA levels in 196 healthy subjects. 50 Better outcomes were observed among patients who began treatment within this reference range compared with those whose levels were elevated. 50,51 Overall, BCMA plays a crucial role in the proliferation and long-term survival of MM cells, inducing their evasion from apoptosis and supporting the production of immunosuppressive molecules.…”

“…48 It was confirmed that sBCMA is elevated in MM and correlates with disease status and survival. Patients responding to the treatment had lower sBCMA than those with progressive disease, 49,50 and patients with a higher sBCMA level had significantly shorter progression-free survival (PFS) and OS. That indicates that sBCMA might be a new biomarker for the diagnosis of MM, and can also be a tool for the prognosis and monitoring of treatment response.…”
