“…These invasions can drastically alter a manager's plan for a specific waterbody, especially given the high cost and low likelihood of invasive species extirpation (Vander Zanden et al, 2010). Furthermore, current and future projections of walleye fishing effort should play a major role in categorising waterbodies into the RAD framework, but both are not well understood for most waterbodies in the state because of the time-intensive nature of measuring fishing effort (Trudeau et al, 2021). A third important, but unpredictable, piece of information in managing any recreational fishery, which cannot be included in the tool, is political and logistical considerations.…”

“…When constructing these surveys, consideration should be given to consistency among onsite methodologies to enable comparisons across space and time. Model‐based approaches that use auxiliary data and integrate multiple data sources have been utilised with success elsewhere (Trudeau et al, 2021) and may be another alternative for obtaining effort and catch information for small‐scale areas. Tour operator (charter) vessels may also comprise a large proportion of fishing activity that could provide an alternative data source.…”

“…Direct estimation methods, which disaggregate survey data to a required subpopulation, are an element of the small‐area estimation field of statistics (Ghosh & Rao, 1994; Rao, 2003). These methods were tested in this study in lieu of indirect, model‐based methods, which borrow strength from additional auxiliary data from other spatial areas or time periods (Chambers & Clark, 2012; Trudeau et al, 2021).…”

“…Limited creel data make it impossible to quantify changes in angling effort on these lakes. Future resist – accept – direct strategies for ogaawag should strive to incorporate regular creel surveys at the landscape level every 1–2 years to understand how angling pressure may be changing in response to management actions (Dassow et al, 2022; Trudeau et al, 2021)…”
