Estimating Onset of Precipitation of Dissolved Asphaltene in the Solution of Solvent + Precipitant Using Artificial Neural Network Technique

Abstract: Asphaltene precipitation is traditionally modeled using polymer solution theories or cubic equations of state. We propose another approach based on artificial neural network technique to model onset of precipitation of dissolved asphaltene in the solution of solvent + precipitant. A mathematical model based on feed-forward artificial neural network technique, which takes advantage of a modified Levenberg-Marquardt optimization algorithm, has been used to model onset of precipitation of dissolved asphaltene in … Show more

“…Reducing the well inflow performance and increasing the overall operating cost, wettability alteration of the reservoir rock, plugging surface facilities and flow lines, contributing to catalyst deactivation, and equipment fouling are some of their detrimental consequences . To mitigate the problems induced by asphaltenes, a thorough understanding of the mechanisms of asphaltene destabilization (aggregation/precipitation) as well as the effective related factors is essential . Asphaltene stability and the mechanisms of its precipitation and aggregation in crude dead oils or model oils have attracted substantial experimental and modelling research attention for several decades .…”

“…[1,9] To mitigate the problems induced by asphaltenes, a thorough understanding of the mechanisms of asphaltene destabilization (aggregation/ precipitation) as well as the effective related factors is essential. [10,11] Asphaltene stability and the mechanisms of its precipitation and aggregation in crude dead oils or model oils have attracted substantial experimental and modelling research attention for several decades. [1,[12][13][14][15][16][17][18] These works are mostly limited to the synthetic asphaltenes extracted by addition of the saturated hydrocarbon solvents (e.g.…”

“…The presence of asphaltenes on heat transfer surfaces further favors fouling of equipment because asphaltenes are more prone to attach to already coked surfaces than a clean metallic alloy surface (Asprino et al 2005). In order to mitigate problems caused by asphaltenes, a thorough understanding of the process of asphaltenes precipitation, flocculation and deposition and the factors affecting them is necessary (Macchietto et al, 2011;Mohammadi and Richon, 2008;Srinivasan, 2008;Wiehe, 2008). Factors, such as, temperature, pressure and crude oil composition have been observed to effect asphaltenes solubility and precipitation *Corresponding author address: Department of Chemical Engineering, Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS, Bandar Seri Iskander, 31750 Tronoh, Perak, MALAYSIA.…”

“…In recent scientific literature, there are many studies on the selforganization of asphaltenes in solutions of solvents [28][29][30]. However, the study of the asphaltenes behavior directly in the oil system is of a much greater interest, since regularities obtained in solutions do not reflect the nature and completeness of the processes that occur in real oils.…”
