Estimating the Absorption of Soil-Derived Uranium in Humans

Abstract: The aim of the present study was to improve the estimation of soil-derived uranium absorption in humans. For this purpose, an in vitro solubility assay was combined with a human study by using a specific edible soil low in uranium. The mean bioaccessibility of the soil-derived uranium, determined by the solubility assay in artificial gastrointestinal fluid, was found to be 7.7% with a standard deviation of 0.2%. The corresponding bioavailability of the soil-derived uranium in humans was assumed to be log-norma… Show more

“…In both studies the percentage of 238 U extracted by the STOM þ INT solution was greater than the STOM solution. Tr€ aber et al (2014Tr€ aber et al ( , 2015 also extracted U-containing soils using the DIN 19738 method, although the STOM values were not given. A common feature of these results, where the STOM extraction of U is lower than the STOM þ INT, is that they were obtained using digests with relatively low concentrations of phosphate.…”

“…The effect of the separation method of dissolved from undissolved fraction can also influence the dissolved fraction. One study indicates that the choice between centrifugation, centrifugation and microfiltration, or only microfiltration is not significant ( Träber et al 2014 ). Others suggest that centrifugation results in somewhat higher dissolved fractions than filtrations with 0.45 μm ( Van de Wiele et al 2007 ).…”

“…The dissolution experiment can provide an estimate of the fraction dissolved in the GI tract, while data from human studies provide information on absorption of soluble uranium in the GI tract. Träber et al (2014) presented a method to acquire an in vitro model specific factor that relates the dissolved fraction F D and f A . The relationship is given in eqn (1), where F D_absorbed , is the fraction of dissolved material absorbed to blood.…”

“…Contrarily, 238 U solubility is elevated by lowering the pH value. This affects the dissolution of 238 U with acid in chemical reactions [31,32]. 238 U concentrations rely on the intake amount of the soil samples, volume of gastric fluid, and volume of intestinal fluid [33].…”
