Estimating the global incidence of traumatic brain injury

Abstract: OBJECTIVE Traumatic brain injury (TBI)-the "silent epidemic"-contributes to worldwide death and disability more than any other traumatic insult. Yet, TBI incidence and distribution across regions and socioeconomic divides remain unknown. In an effort to promote advocacy, understanding, and targeted intervention, the authors sought to quantify the case burden of TBI across World Health Organization (WHO) regions and World Bank (WB) income groups. METHODS Open-source epidemiological data on road traffic injuries… Show more

“…TBI is a major health problem with high rates of mortality and morbidity worldwide (Dewan et al, ). It involves dynamic processes in which the inflammatory brain response is coordinated by several cells, such as astrocytes, phagocytic cells and microglia, and different cytokines, with IL‐6 being an important mediator of the inflammatory cascade (Chhor et al, ; Frugier et al, ; Graber, Costine, & Hickey, ; A. Kumar, Alvarez‐Croda, Stoica, Faden, & Loane, ; Lenzlinger, Morganti‐Kossmann, Laurer, & Mclntosh, ; Penkowa et al, ; Penkowa, Moos, et al, ).…”

“…In developed nations, TBI is the foremost cause of trauma-related death and injury (Logsdon et al, 2015). It is estimated that each year, 69 million (95% CI 64-74 million) individuals suffer from TBI worldwide, with the Southeast Asian and Western Pacific regions having the highest overall burden of disease (Dewan et al, 2018). Approximately 2.8 million people in 2013 experienced hospitalization, emergency room visits, or death from TBI in the United States (Taylor, Bell, Breiding, & Xu, 2017).…”

“…Globally, more than 69 million people sustain a TBI each year (Dewan et al, ), and 2.7 million of these individuals reside in the United States (Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, ). TBI is defined as “a bump, blow or jolt to the head or a penetrating head injury that disrupts the normal function of the brain” (Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, ).…”
