Estimating the Impact of Salinity Stress on Livelihood Choices and Incomes in Rural Bangladesh

Abstract: This paper explores the impact of salinity on livelihood choices of rural households in south‐western Bangladesh. We find interdependence among households' decisions involving various livelihood choices. High salinity reduces a household's probability of entrepreneurship while those households that stick only to agriculture suffer significant crop losses because of salinity. Households also face a trade‐off between subsistence and entrepreneurial activities, that is, participation in one type of activity reduc… Show more

“…K. Hasan et al, 2018;Szabo et al, 2016b). There has also been some investigation into the factors correlated with agricultural adaptation in the context of a changing environment (Anik et al, 2018;Habiba et al, 2012;Sarker et al, 2013). These studies, along with our findings, point toward the need for implementation research that assesses socio-economic circumstances as mediating factors for adaptation uptake and food security.…”

“…Adaptation is a farmer's spontaneous or planned response to changing climate to withstand production loss [45,46], where the outcome might be stressful or gainful livelihood strategies uptake within and/or beyond farming [55]. Farmers often do trade-offs amongst multiple objectives [56] as there are interdependency among his/her personal, family and farming objectives [e.g.…”

“…salinity decreases plant and microbe abundances (Folli-Pereira et al 2013), destroys ecosystem diversity (Chaves et al 2009), accelerates soil and environmental degradation processes (Estrada et al 2013b), and, consequently, affects the entire food chain. Faster-than-predicted climate change has exacerbated the severity of salt stress (Chaves et al 2009;Ilangumaran and Smith 2017), and saline soils continue to become more prevalent (Anik et al 2018). Indeed, the area of land affected by salinity is estimated to be increasing at a rate of 15 to 20 million hectares per year (Sardo and Hamdy 2005), and the economic loss caused by soil salinity is approximately 27.3 billion dollars (Suarez et al 2015).…”
