Estimating the Molecular Gas Mass of Low-redshift Galaxies from a Combination of Mid-infrared Luminosity and Optical Properties

Abstract: We present CO(J=1-0) and/or CO(J=2-1) spectroscopy for 31 galaxies selected from the ongoing Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey, obtained with multiple telescopes. This sample is combined with CO observations from the literature to study the correlation of the CO luminosities (L CO(1−0) ) with the mid-infrared luminosities at 12 (L 12µm ) and 22 µm (L 22µm ), as well as the dependence of the residuals on a variety of galaxy properties. The correlation with L 12µm is tighter and … Show more

“…We further added the (U)LIRGs from the HerCULES survey (Rosenberg et al 2015), and the local spirals from the HERACLES (Bigiel et al 2008;Leroy et al 2008Leroy et al , 2009 and KINGFISH surveys (Kennicutt et al 2011;Dale et al 2012Dale et al , 2017. We note that other collections of nearby objects with coverage of low-J CO emission are available (e.g., Cicone et al 2017;Saintonge et al 2017;Pan et al 2018;Gao et al 2019), but we privileged galaxies with observables and properties more directly comparable with our ALMA sample. At higher redshifts, we incorporated the MS and SB observations from the PHIBSS-2 survey at z = 0.5 − 0.8 (Freundlich et al 2019), the four BzK galaxies in D15 (Dannerbauer et al 2009;Daddi et al 2010a;Aravena et al 2010Aravena et al , 2014, and a pool of starbursts at z = 1.5 (Silverman et al 2015(Silverman et al , 2018a.…”

We adopted an extended L IR range in the right panels to show the L CO(5−4) and L CO(7−6) luminosities obtained from mapping nearby objects (Liu et al 2015a), for which CO (2 − 1) observations on the same scales are not available.…”

“…This section provides additional visualization of the gas fractions of high-SNR (median continuum SNR/pixel > 10) QPSBs and the comparison samples. We also show that some PSBs have Hα/Hβ < 2.5, which 2019) uses SFR from spectral energy distribution fitting, and the color coding is by WISE 12 µm luminosity, which is also correlated with SFR (Cluver et al 2017) and CO luminosity (Gao et al 2019). The relation used here is more accurate and has a root mean square deviation of 0.3 dex.…”
