Estimating the number of female sex workers in Côte d'Ivoire: results and lessons learned

Abstract: Successful application of three methods to estimate the population size of FSW in five cities in Côte d'Ivoire enabled us to make recommendations for size estimations of key population in low-income countries.

“…There are many methods to estimate population sizes, each with various strengths and limitations [4]. Capture-recapture (CRC) is one method that has been used in epidemiology [11-13] to estimate the size of key populations [14-17]. This method begins with an initial capture, as individual members of the target population are sampled, tagged, or offered a unique object, and released back into the population.…”

“…Two captures are used in the classic CRC method; however, additional captures can be added to increase the number of data points from which estimates are generated, resulting in increased ability to account for the potential interaction; so, the assumption of independence between captures may be relaxed [20]. Due to its mathematically grounded and logical results, 3S-CRC is increasingly utilized in epidemiology to estimate the size of the key populations targeted by health intervention programs for certain health disorders [25][26][27]. The 3S-CRC approach has been utilized in numerous studies to estimate the size of specific population groups-including FSWs, men who have sex with men, and people who inject drugs-without sampling frames [28][29][30][31][32].…”

“…The traditional CRC method employs two captures; however, extra captures can be added to increase the number of data points from which estimates are created, resulting in more stable and robust PSEs [ 47 ]. The 3S-CRC method has been commonly used in epidemiology to estimate the size of key populations targeted by health interventions for certain health conditions owing to its mathematically grounded and defensible results [ 23 , 48 , 49 ]. Several studies have used the 3S-CRC method to estimate the size of certain population groups without a sampling frame, including FSW, MSM, and PWID [ 28 , 50 - 52 ].…”
