Estimating the Relative Speed of RF Jammers in VANETs

Abstract: Vehicular Ad-Hoc Networks (VANETs) aim at enhancing road safety and providing a comfortable driving environment by delivering early warning and infotainment messages to the drivers. Jamming attacks, however, pose a significant threat to their performance. In this paper, we propose a novel Relative Speed Estimation Algorithm (RSEA) of a moving interfering vehicle that approaches a Transmitter (T x) -Receiver (Rx) pair, that interferes with their Radio Frequency (RF) communication by conducting a Denial of Servi… Show more

“…Also, some of the values (e.g., existing in Algorithm 2) are set heuristically, evaluating the performance by optimally adjusting those values dynamically would certainly enhance the obtained privacy level of WHISPER. Moreover technologies like blockchain [ 47 ], cryptography [ 48 ], IDSs [ 49 ], and Edge Computing [ 50 ] which are widely recognized as key enablers for IoV could be integrated or used in parallel with our solution. Finally, using other metrics like the number of sent BSMs, the number of verified signatures, and evaluating WHISPER’s performance under different scenarios like the free-way model are some of our future plans.…”

“…The node lifetime is estimated based on the ratio of node drain rate and residual energy [56]. The node stability is calculated with respect to relative velocity [57]. The selection of CH is dependent on the stability factor of a particular node.…”

“…The novelty of this metric is that it can be estimated by the physical properties of the wireless channel, using the effect of the Doppler phenomenon. For the jamming attack, we use again the Doppler effect in order to estimate the ∆u between the jammer and the receiver from the combined value of the useful and the jamming signal at the receiver, as described in [27]. The scarcity of publicly available real vehicular communication datasets has been previously discussed in [28].…”
