Estimating the weight of the Pleistocene marsupial lion, Thylacoleo carnifex (Thylacoleonidae:Marsupialia): implications for the ecomorphology of a marsupial super-predator and hypotheses of impoverishment of Australian marsupial carnivore faunas

Abstract: Using demonstrated relationships between body mass and humeral and femoral circumferences, we calculate the weight of the only specimen of Thylacoleo carnifex known from a near-complete skeleton. Body weights of 112–143 kg were estimated for this individual, from Moree, north-western New South Wales. Extrapolating on the basis of geometric similtude, we further estimated the weight of the largest T. carnifex for which we had cranial data at 128–164 kg. Moreover, estimates for at least three of the thirteen ava… Show more

“…For all other skeletal elements only their presence and number was recorded. On the basis of the long bone measurements, estimations of shoulder height and body weight of the fox species discovered in burial chamber M4 were made following the methodologies in Harcourt (1974), Anyonge (1993) and Wroe et al (1999). For the calculation of the shoulder height, the factors (coefficients) suggested by Harcourt were used.…”

“…The near-complete domination of the cheektooth row by huge vertical sheafing blades in this species leaves it singularly unsuited to a scavenging role (Wells et al 1982). Massively built• averaging around t 04 kg and with the most extreme carnivorous dentition of any mammal, the marsupial lion was formidable by any standard (Wroe 1999a(Wroe , 2000(Wroe , 2002Wroe et al 1999Wroe et al , 2003a. Found continent wide, it was also relatively abundant and widespread (wroe 2002).…”

“…youngest species of the genus Thylacoleo (T. crassidentatus and T. hilli being known from the Pliocene), the largest member of all thylacoleonids (ca. 100-160 kg; Wroe et al 1999;Wroe et al 2003), and the most geographically dispersed of the three.…”
