The freeze-thaw process is a weathering phenomenon that occurs in rocks and stones when water enters small cracks and pores within the stone. When the temperature drops below freezing, the water inside the rock expands as it freezes, exerting pressure on the rock from within. In this study the effect of freeze thaw on mechanical parameter uniaxial compression strength (UCS) and ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) of 47 oolitic samples were considered. At first, capillary absorption for cylindrical and prismatic oolitic samples were measured and then freeze-thaw experiment with 23 cycles were applied to the samples. UPV of samples before and after freeze-thaw was analysed by two ultrasonic devices including Geotron and Pundit. It was observed that freeze thaw decreases primary velocity (Vp) and secondary velocity (Vs) by around 20 and 7% respectively. However, average UCS of 1.6 MPa indicates strength decrease of samples, which represent negative effect of pore expansion due to freeze thaw on strength parameter of samples.

Freeze-thaw action of rocks has caused many engineering geological disasters in cold regions. Estimation of the freeze-thaw damage degree and strengths loss of rocks are crucial for the prevention of freeze-thaw disasters. The main aim of this research is to investigate the influence of water saturation on the deterioration of rocks under freeze-thaw and find the best evaluation index. P-wave velocity, elastic modulus and porosity, as the widely used indexes, were adopted to define the freeze-thaw damage variables and predict the UCS loss under freeze-thaw. The change law of these three indexes shows that the critical water saturation for causing a considerable freeze-thaw damage of sandstones is approximately 60%∼80%. P-wave velocity is proved to be a competitive nondestructive parameter, which can be measured easily and correctly without any time-consuming mechanical test. In addition, P-wave velocity can be well used to predict strength loss of rocks under freeze-thaw by performing a statistical analysis of experimental data. It is suggested that the P-wave velocity may be the primary and best index to quantify the freeze-thaw damage degree of rocks with different water saturations comparison with the other two indexes. This study can provide a better understanding of the deterioration of physico-mechanical properties for unsaturated rocks and give a reference for the selection of freeze-thaw evaluation indexes.

The Freeze-Thaw Strength Evolution of Fiber-Reinforced Cement Mortar Based on NMR and Fractal Theory: Considering Porosity and Pore Distribution

Predicting the strength evolution of fiber-reinforced cement mortar under freeze-thaw cycles plays an important role in engineering stability evaluation. In this study, the microscopic pore distribution characteristics of fiber-reinforced cement mortar were obtained by using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) technology. The change trend of T2 spectrum curve and porosity cumulative distribution curve showed that the freeze-thaw resistance of cement mortar increased first and then decreased with the fiber content. The optimal fiber content was approximately 0.5%. By conducting mechanical experiments, it is found that the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) of the samples exhibited the ‘upward convex’ evolution trends with freeze-thaw cycles due to cement hydration, and based on fractal theory, the negative correlation between UCS and Dmin was established. Eventually, a freeze-thaw strength prediction model considering both porosity and pore distribution was proposed, which could accurately predict the strength deterioration law of cement-based materials under freeze-thaw conditions.
