Estimation and Prediction of Road Traffic Emissions in Ulaanbaatar

Abstract: In this paper, a dynamic model of mobile sources of air pollution is used to predict emission levels from a vehicle population within a monitoring system over time. This model is also used to assess the effectiveness of applying a new gas exhaust standard. Regarding the results in relation to vehicle type, HDVs (heavy duty vehicles) were the main sources of NO x and PM, accounting for 57% of NO x and 70.1% of PM emissions in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. The HDVs and other vehicles more than 10 years old, accounted f… Show more

“…As described in the previous sections, in addition to coal combustion, automobile emissions play a significant role in air pollution in cities (Davy et al, 2011;Amgalan et al, 2016). For the last ten years, the number of vehicles has increased in Ulaanbaatar by a factor of 4.5 and has reached ~540,000 (Bayasgalan and Matsumoto, 2017;NSOM, 2021). Approximately 72% of all vehicles were aged more than 10 years, and most of them were second-hand (Bayasgalan and Matsumoto, 2017).…”

Approximately 72% of all vehicles were aged more than 10 years, and most of them were second-hand (Bayasgalan and Matsumoto, 2017). In connection with automobile emissions, NO2 concentrations detected at roadside sites of NAMEM were in the range of 41-65 µg m -3 and exceeded national air quality guidelines for 97% of all measured days in 2014 (Bayasgalan and Matsumoto, 2017).…”

“…Therefore, applying strict policy standards for vehicle emissions could reduce these levels (Huo et al, 2012). Converting to the Euro standard for all vehicles, including those over ten years old, the CO, NO x , HC, and PM emissions will be significantly decreased (Batjargal, 2017). The change from Euro 2 to Euro 4 is considered an essential solution for decreasing air pollutants.…”

“…Sources and literature show that the previous researches mainly emphasized on the air pollution caused by vehicle emission and fuel releasing impacts (Byambaa, B., 2019, Guttikunda, S.K., et al 2013, Bayasgalan, B. et al 2017 Environmental influences of auto repair service have not been studied yet, therefore a measurement of toxic substances and pollution intensity is considered as a priority of this study. The main purpose of this study was first, to assess the concentration of heavy metals in surface soil samples near some auto repair centers of Ulaanbaatar city, Mongolia.…”
