A total of 10 sub-regions were identified and tree total volume equations were developed for economically important Dahurian larch species in northeast China (Daxing'an Mountain region/Heilongjiang province). These equations were based on a simple power function and adjusted to the forest inventory data volumes of three mountainous regions, including the northwest of northern slope of Yilehuli Mountains (NWYLHLM), the southeast of northern slope of Yilehuli Mountains (SAYLHLM) and the eastern slope of northern part of Daxin'an Mountains (NDXAM). The volume equations were tested to determine if differences by ecoregion were statistically significant. Results varied by species, volume and ecoregion suggesting that the relationship between tree volume and tree diameter of Dahurian larch (Larix gmelinii Rupr) tree species is significantly different between the three geographic regions, depending on local climatic, soil and ecological conditions. This implies that the provincial and regional models of volume-diameter relationships are not appropriate for predicting tree volume at ecoregional level. In addition, the use of an ecoregional specific model will lead to significant bias in predicting the total volume of trees. The ecoregion-based volume models developed in this study could provide more accurate information on tree growth and development to forest resource managers and planners.

In this study, tree volume equations have been developed for Brutian pine (Pinus brutia Ten.). The data was obtained from the natural brutian pine stands in Eğirdir region. Totally of 405 trees are sampled and randomly separated into the two groups. Since there is no real independent dataset, twofold evaluation scheme was applied and the prediction performance of 18 models was evaluated. For this purpose, four different criteria values were used: mean error (MD), mean absolute error (MAD), coefficient of determination (R 2) and root mean square error (RMSE). The prediction performances of the models were evaluated on the basis of relative ranking. As a result of the evaluations, the most successful results were obtained with Model 4, while the most unsuccessful results were obtained with model 6. The obtained results suggested that Model 4 should be used to more reliable volume predictions for natural brutian pine stands in Eğirdir Region

This study aimed to examine the effects of soil depth on fine root biomass (FRB) and production (FRP), and determine the relationship between FRP and net primary production (NPP) across two root diameter classes (<1 and 1-2 mm) in Pinus densiflora and Quercus serrata forests. FRB and FRP were investigated from April 2016 to March 2017 using the soil sequential coring and ingrowth core methods. In P. densiflora and Q. serrata forests, mean FRB < 1 mm (2.22 ± 0.23 and 2.63 ± 0.23 Mg ha -1 ) and annual FRP < 1 mm (0.97 ± 0.09 and 1.55 ± 0.16 Mg ha -1 year -1 ) were higher than mean FRB 1-2 mm (0.63 ± 0.12 and 1.72 ± 0.38 Mg ha -1 ) and annual FRP 1-2 mm (0.26 ± 0.14 and 0.20 ± 0.06 Mg ha -1 year -1 ) at 0-30 cm depth. Soil properties, such as soil moisture, organic matter, and inorganic nitrogen, decreased with soil depth (0-30 cm). The gradient of soil properties corresponding with soil depth could directly and indirectly influence FRP <1 mm, resulting in higher FRB <1 mm and FRP <1 mm at topsoil (0-10 cm). Additionally, only FRP <1 mm showed significant relationships with NPP and litter production. Although very fine roots (<1 mm in diameter) occupied a small percentage of NPP (7.5%), they may be an important factor for predicting forest NPP, since NPP would be regulated by the capability of roots to absorb water and nutrients. Our findings indicate that finer roots are more sensitive to soil conditions than thicker roots, and they could be a forest productivity indicator.
